WASHINGTON - U. S. Customs and Border Protection officers found an illegal drug shipment containing Seroquel 300mg tablets, a drug used to treat schizophrenia, an enlarged brain or depression.

The shipment was intercepted at a U. pharmacy and sold to an undercover FDA agent.

“When you look at the drug, it’s not just a drug; it’s a medication,” said Acting U. Customs and Border Protection Director John C. O’anga. “It’s a treatment medication.”

O’anga said that while the FDA had previously advised the agency about the presence of the drug in a shipment destined for the U. market, it had not warned the public that the medication could contain dangerous chemicals.

“This isn’t an issue that’s a concern to anybody considering the medication,” O’anga said. “The FDA has always warned against this kind of thing.”

The FDA had been concerned about the safety of the medication and had alerted the agency about potential drug exposures associated with the illegal substance.

According to the FDA, the risk of harmful drug exposure is heightened when patients are exposed to dangerous substances like cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin.

“We’ve gotten some very compelling data that shows an increased risk of fatal drug exposure,” O’anga said.

The FDA said the risk was “a very concerning finding” because of the potentially dangerous chemicals found in the drug, which could pose a life-threatening risk to consumers. The agency said it has received several reports of drug exposures in patients who had used the medication.

The agency also said that the FDA had notified pharmacies that if patients were exposed to the substance, they could face fines or other penalties under federal law. The company has also been ordered to report to the FDA any drug exposures.

O’anga said the company is not expected to respond immediately to the FDA’s inquiries.

“This is not a situation where we will provide a response,” O’anga said. “If you need a response, you can go back to the FDA.”

The FDA had warned the public that the presence of the drug could cause potentially deadly reactions in some patients.

Federal law requires a patient’s medical history to be consistent with the drug’s potential for harm. The FDA had warned the public about the possibility of drug exposure in patients taking Seroquel 300 mg tablets.

The FDA said it had received numerous reports of drug exposures in patients who had used the medication. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that those patients taking Seroquel 300 mg daily experienced a 69% increased risk of fatal drug exposure.

O’anga said that the risk was “very concerning” because it could lead to patient suicide and other complications.

“People should be very careful with taking this medication, because it could cause suicidal thoughts,” O’anga said.

The FDA also said the risks should be considered in patients with preexisting medical conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes.

“If you have a history of these conditions, we encourage you to speak to your doctor,” O’anga said. “We want to be clear about the risks associated with this medication.”

The FDA had warned the public that the presence of the drug could lead to potentially dangerous drug exposures.
